Student Program
Whelton Hiutin LLP is a boutique firm that focuses on all things litigation. We look for students who have a deep interest in both oral and written advocacy. The firm typically hires two articling students.
During the articling term, students at Whelton Hiutin are exposed to wide array of work. Our students are an indispensable part of the team and can expect to work directly alongside partners and associates in preparing cases for the courtroom and through going to court. Students often seize the opportunity to argue motions, appear before tribunals, conduct examinations and run small claims files. The end goal is to set students up for success in the courtroom through teaching, early experience and direct involvement with files. The firm sees and treats articling students as future colleagues and is invested in their development and success.
Whelton Hiutin has a culture of mentorship. Articling students are paired with an associate mentor at the beginning of their term to guide them through the overarching articling experience. However, students will quickly discover that all of the firm’s lawyers are generous with their time and guidance. While students are given the opportunity to be independent advocates and gain firsthand courtroom experience, this does not mean that they are left to their own devices. Instead, students have the flexibility to explore and develop their personal style of advocacy throughout the litigation process, with the comfort that they will be supported and nurtured with constructive feedback.
Whelton Hiutin does not have a rotation system in the sense of working in a specific practice area – students are exposed a wide variety of areas, including corporate, real estate and contractual disputes, personal injury cases and appellate and administrative law work. However, students do “rotate” between Whelton Hiutin’s two offices in Toronto and Vaughan. The benefit of this rotation is to introduce students to the entire firm and to expose students to different types of files.
Application Process
Whelton Hiutin recruits articling students in accordance with the rules and guidelines set annually by the Law Society of Ontario. Whelton Hiutin accepts applications through viLawPortal during the articling recruit process.
Should your application stand out, we will schedule an in-firm interview with you on the designated Call Day. During this interview, you will meet with two lawyers who will get to know you and your interest in advocacy. These interviews are a two-way street: prospective students can ask questions about the articling experience and can arrange to meet with a current articling student to learn more about the program. Whelton Hiutin also hosts a reception during the in-firm recruitment week to get to know students better in a more relaxed environment.
